How is Ralph responsible in Lord of the Flies?

Ralph's ability to call assemblies, create rules, and protect Piggy and the littluns make him a responsible individual throughout the novel Lord of the Flies. Ralph is the first person to call the boys together on the island and fulfills the position as chief after he is elected. Ralph does his best to prioritize essential tasks, such as building shelters and maintaining a signal fire on top of the mountain. Ralph offers the boys encouragement and tries his best to maintain order while he is chief. Although Ralph is not a successful leader, he does not give into Jack's tyrannical leadership and opposes him throughout the entire novel. In addition to holding assemblies to discuss various issues that the boys have on the island, Ralph takes on the responsibility of protecting Piggy and the littluns from Jack. Ralph sticks up for Piggy on several occasions and openly challenges Jack in front of his hunters. Ralph not only takes on the responsibility of being the elected leader, but he also protects and cares for the littluns throughout the novel.
